FAQ: IS 1200 Series Measurement and Reporting Standards

What is the IS 1200 series?

The IS 1200 series consists of Indian Standards for measurement and reporting in construction projects. It includes various parts covering different aspects of construction, such as earthwork, concrete work, brickwork, stone masonry, formwork, and refractory work.

What are the general measurement guidelines for IS 1200?

Measurements should be taken to the nearest 0.01 m, and areas and cubical contents should be worked out to the nearest 0.01 sq.m. and 0.01 cu.m., respectively. Specific dimensions and units may vary depending on the type of work and the relevant part of the standard.

What types of work are excluded from measurement under IS 1200?

The IS 1200 series specifies exclusions for certain conditions, including work in or underwater, work in foul or tidal conditions, work in snow, and work in liquid mud. These conditions often require separate measurement and reporting.

How should excavation work be measured according to IS 1200 Part 1?

For surface excavation exceeding 1.5 m in width and 10 sq.m in area but not exceeding 300 mm in depth, it should be measured in square meters. Special conditions may apply for specific types of excavation, such as post-tensioned concrete ground beams.

What are the measurement requirements for concrete work under IS 1200 Part 2?

Dimensions should be measured to the nearest 0.01 m, with slab thickness measured to the nearest 0.005 m. Areas and cubic contents should be calculated to the nearest 0.01 sq.m. and 0.01 cu.m., respectively. Additional work in certain conditions like underwater or in foul situations should be measured separately.

What deductions or additions are specified in IS 1200 for brickwork and stone masonry?

No deductions are made for ends of dissimilar materials, small openings, or volume occupied by reinforcement and pipes up to specified sizes. Measurements for circular brickwork and stone masonry, including boulder work, must include specific considerations for cutting, waste, and additional labor.

How is formwork measured according to IS 1200 Part 5?

Formwork is measured net in place with dimensions taken to the nearest 0.01 m. Specific classifications include flat surfaces, vertical surfaces, arches, cylindrical shells, and more. Certain work conditions, such as work in underwater or foul situations, require separate measurement.

What does IS 1200 Part 6 say about refractory work?

Refractory work measurements should be net and in the decimal system, with dimensions and cubic content measured to the nearest 0.01 m and weight to the nearest 0.001 tonnes. Wastage is deemed to include cutting consequences.

Are there any general exclusions for measurements across all parts of IS 1200?

Yes, all parts of IS 1200 exclude work in challenging conditions such as underwater, foul situations, tidal conditions, snow, and liquid mud. These conditions often necessitate separate measurement or specific considerations.

Where can I find the complete IS 1200 standards for detailed information?

The complete IS 1200 standards can be accessed through official standards organizations or purchased from authorized distributors. For precise guidelines and updates, refer to the most recent version of each part.
