We have used 23 types of cement in which it has been used in different places. But we have used two types of cement communally. Which is as follows.

  1. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
  2. Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)

There are two types of cement. Usually, these two types are used in cement construction.

1. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)

OPC cement is a commonly used cement. This cement is widely used in construction. This cement is the most popular choice.

The advantages of using OPC cement are as below.

  1. OPC have been given a number of exemptions and their fore have a lower compliance-related burden than a private limited company.
  2. It has great resistance to cracking and shrinkage but has less resistance to chemical attacks.
  3. The initial setting time of OPC is faster than PPC so it is recommended in projects where props are to be removed early.
  4. The curing period of OPC is less than PPC and curing costs reduced. Hence recommended that curing are cost-prohibitive.

Grade 43 and Grade 33 OPC cement is an old grade of cement used for residential construction and is now being replaced by OPC 53 grade cement. This OPC 53-grade cement is the best cement for concrete.

2. Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)

This cement is widely used in masonry work. This cement is cheaper than OPC cement. The strength of this cement is equivalent to OPC 53 grade cement.

Some of the advantages of using PPC are,

  1. It is cheaper than the OPC.
  2. It facilitates better workability.
  3. The generation of heat of hydration is lower than OPC.
  4. It also prohibits micro-cracks in the structure, which further increases the strength of the concrete structure.
  5. The soluble calcium hydroxide is converted into insoluble cemented ingredients, thus making the structure impervious/impermeable to water.
  6. The production of Calcium Hydroxide is not as much as it is in OPC. The low level of calcium hydroxide significantly provides all-around strength and durability to the concrete structure.
  7. The setting time of concrete is prolonged, which helps the mason for good finishing of concrete or cement mortar. The cohesiveness of the concrete mix helps for better finishing of concrete.

One thing to keep in mind when choosing between OPC and PPC is how many days you want to remove the formwork. Concrete mixes made from PPC take longer to set up than OPC. So choose accordingly.
